Two running for chief of police in Opelousas

Updated:
Two men are now vying for top cop in Opelousas, an incumbent and a private investigator.

Investigator, Donald Thompson, announced his run for Opelousas Chief of Police Sunday evening on the steps of the St. Landry Parish Courthouse with his family by his side. "For me now, the time is right for me to run for Chief of Police to make this city different. I want to make this city now the safe city that it was once before," said Thompson.

Thompson has 33 years experience in law enforcement and 28 of those years were served with the Opelousas Police Department. Thompson said he wants to build a stronger relationship between the community and the department. "The difference that I'm going to make is that I'm going to meet the community. I'm going to be very proactive, not retroactive," said Thompson.

Following Donald Thompson's announcement, Police Chief Incumbent, Perry Gallow, said with seven and a half years experience as Chief of Police he welcomes the competition. "I believe that am the best person for this job. I believe that we will continue to do the things that are necessary to keep Opelousas safe. I look forward to the challenge, I'm passionate about what I do," said Gallow.

Chief Gallow announced his run for re-election in late March and expects a strong challenge from his opponent. Elections will be held on November 4th.
