After some time of worry from public officials on whether or not voters would approve a ten year half-cent sales tax, all fear came to a halt Saturday night. Voters approved the tax by an overwhelming 72 percent of the vote. The funds will go to operating and maintaining the jail, while construction and property costs come from a $10 million dollar state capital outlay fund. On April 29, the Jeff Davis Police Jury announced they already had plans to purchase a property; 17 acres located just west of the Highway 90 overpass in Jennings. The undeveloped commercial property for the proposed 200-bed parish jail.came after an agreement had been signed with Earline Evans Angelle, a representative of the Earl Evans Inc. estate, to sell 17.02 acres of land to the parish for $272,320, or about $16,000 per acre. The site was selected because it is in a sparsely populated area, has some infrastructure in place, including water and sewage lines, and is within five miles of the parish courthouse.
