Dead Bird With West NIle Found in Lafayette

The mosquito control company contracted with Lafayette Parish confirmed Thursday the first positive test for West Nile virus in a bird within the parish. Officials say the dead mockingbird was found Wednesday near Camillia Drive and Johnston Street , an area typically known as a hot-bed for West-Nile virus. The company is now taking steps to eliminate West Nile Virus from the area which includes spraying for five consecutive days in the area, putting out rabbit traps to test for the virus in animals, and searching for West Nile breeding sites. Officials are warning people to drain standing water where mosquitoes can breed and remember to use insect repellant when outdoors.
