Jindal signs bill to tighten La. explosives rules

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Gov. Bobby Jindal has agreed to toughen state regulations and oversight of explosives licenses in Louisiana.

Jindal signed into law Wednesday the bill by Sen. Francis Thompson, a Democrat from Delhi. The measure was a response to the discovery of millions of pounds of improperly stored military propellant at Camp Minden.

An October 2012 explosion led to an investigation in which a Louisiana State Police investigator discovered the propellant. Under the new law, the state police will have the authority to inspect facilities with state explosives licenses.

The new law also will require that manufacturers, dealers and users of explosives have a valid license or permit from the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.
