LAFAYETTE, La. -Lexie Elkins had three hits and three RBI and Shelbi Redfearn had four hits, as the No. 16 Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns swept No. 14 Baylor, 5-2 and 7-4 at Getterman Stadium on Tuesday.
The Cajuns improved to 35-7-1 on the season, and swept the season series against Baylor, also defeating them 11-10 in February at the Gulfport College Classic.
Christina Hamilton picked up her 19th win in the doubleheader opener, tossing a complete game, allowing two runs on eight hits and striking out seven, while limiting the Bears to just one free pass.
Baylor's Holly Holl broke the scoreless tie in the fourth inning of game one, snapping a 16-inning shutout streak for Hamilton, with a solo home run to lead-off the inning. After allowing a single on the next batter, Hamilton got a ground out, a pop up and a strikeout to get out of the first jam of the game.
The Cajuns would take the lead in the very next half-inning. Natalie Fernandez reached base on an error to lead the inning off and came around to score on the next batter, a Haley Hayden double, to tie the game at one.
Elkins broke the tie in the next at bat sending a 1-1 pitch to the deepest part of the ballpark for her 14th home run of the season to make it 3-1, Cajuns lead.
Hamilton would get out of another jam in the bottom of the fifth to keep the Cajuns ahead, 3-2, after Baylor got the bases loaded with one out.
Once again the Cajuns responded to a run from the Bears, this time with a two-out, two-RBI single from Fernandez to give the Cajuns a 5-2 lead. They were RBI numbers four and five for Fernandez, driving in pinch runners Cassidy White and Leandra Maly on second and third, after Gabby Felps hit her third double of the season two batters earlier.
After going scoreless for the first three innings of game one, both teams jumped on the scoreboard early in game two. The Cajuns got a first-inning run after an RBI single from Shellie Landry, scoring Hayden, and the Bears tied it up in the bottom of the inning, stealing home during a rundown that caught a runner stealing second.
The Cajuns took the lead in the third with three runs, coming on a pair of doubles by Elkins and Shelbi Redfearn, along with an error by the right fielder to make it 4-1.
The Bears struck for two runs in the third after back-to-back walks to lead-off the inning, a passed ball and and error to cut the Cajuns lead to 4-3. They would eventually tie the game up in the fifth after a wild pitch by relief pitcher Victoria Brown, but it would be all Cajuns from then on out. Hayden broke the tie in the sixth inning with a bases-loaded hit by pitch, and Leandra Maly came around to score on the next batter with a wild pitch to give the Cajuns a 6-4 lead.
Gabby Felps added to that lead and gave the Cajuns some insurance with her second double of the day, driving in Kendall Smith in the top of the seventh.
Brown got the win for the Cajuns, improving to 3-1, tossing the final four innings allowing one run on three hits and two walks, while fanning two batters. Jordan Wallace got the start, tossing the first three innings, allowing three runs on one hit.
The Cajuns will stay on the road and return to conference play with a trip to Arlington, Texas to face Sun Belt newcomer UT Arlington, for the last road trip on the schedule for the Cajuns. The Cajuns and Mavericks will play a 1 p.m. doubleheader on Saturday before finishing up the series on Sunday at noon.
