Iberia Parish deputies warn of sweepstakes scams

Iberia Parish Sheriff deputies are warning the community about a rise in sweepstakes scams pouring in from Jamaica. The scammers are illegally using the Publishers Clearing House name, dangling the prospects of huge winnings.

Scammers inform their targets they have won a sweepstakes prize, but first need to make some type of payment to obtain the prize. Scammers often use the name of Publisher Clearing House or some other well-recognized, trusted brand. Scammers build trust and rapport with their targets and payments only lead to more requests for money. Whatever the method of contact, the scam is always to try and get you to part with your hard-earned money.

In one particular case the scammer instruct the potential victim to purchase a Green Dot Reloadable Prepaid Card for a specific amount. This scammer who identify himself as John, instructs the victim to call 876-567-8751 and give him the 16 digit number on the card and the 3 digit security code off the back of the green dot card. John would then call the green dot card provider and get the victim's money while not delivering the high winnings promised.

Jamaican scammers may call you on the phone, send you an email or mail you a letter (sometimes with a fake check enclosed).

Be warned that anyone asking for payment of any type in order to claim a sweepstakes prize is a scammer. Legitimate sweepstakes are free and no purchase is ever necessary to enter or win a prize - that is the law.
