La. House wants mental health info before abortion

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - The Louisiana House has agreed to require women seeking an abortion in the state to receive a pamphlet that describes possible psychological effects of the procedure, though studies disagree on those effects.

The bill by Republican Rep. Barry Ivey, of Baton Rouge, also would mandate the women get information on the illegality of coerced abortions and services available to human trafficking victims.

Clinics would have to provide the three brochures at the start of the state-mandated, 24-hour waiting period before a woman can have an abortion. The information would be added to other printed materials already required under the "Woman's Right to Know" law.

Ivey's proposal was approved with an 80-10 vote Monday. It moves next to the Senate for consideration.
