Carencro $5.8 million for city projects

The Carencro City Council gave preliminary approval to go to the bond commission for permission to sell $5.8 million in sales tax bonds. Carencro Mayor Glenn Brasseaux ran through the list of projects $5.8 million could help cover.

The big projects appear to be dealing with drainage. "We need another $270,725 to actually have enough money to do it and that will greatly improve the Envie Subdivision and Prejean Subdivision; all that drainage," said Mayor Brasseaux.

The project the mayor explained ties into another project at Walter Drive and Saint Anne; an intersection with issues of water erosion. "The problem is there's water, sewer and gas lines exposed because of the amount of water coming through there.  When it’s all said and done it's going to improve the drainage."

Since the big flood in March 2012, Carencro has been cleaning up ever since. Carencro City Manager Jay Castille said $1.9 million allows for the purchase of property for the city's new sewer wastewater treatment plant that the city will have to build. "That plant is going to cost $20 million. This is just a part of it.  We have another $1.2 million for some major upgrades on two lift stations that were damaged in the flood," explained Castille.

City Engineer Stefan Bourgeois of Fenstermaker and Associates said for Carencro to grow the city needs to advance its infrastructure for water and sewer services.  If not, the city could experience huge problems. "The city would experience a lot of maintenance issues.  Having the system under capacity to serve the clients and the residents."
