Man sentenced for 2011 assault on mail carrier

Updated:

LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - Federal prosecutors say a 33-year-old Opelousas man has been sentenced to 24 years in prison and five years of supervised release for assaulting and robbing a U.S. Postal Service carrier.

U.S. Attorney Stephanie A. Finley's office says Brandon B. Handy was sentenced Friday by U.S. District Judge Elizabeth E. Foote.

During a two-day trial in December, witness testimony and other evidence established that Handy and another person wearing masks and armed with a gun robbed a carrier on Aug. 13, 2011 at the Lawtell Post Office.

Investigators say Handy approached the driver from behind, grabbed him by the neck, and wrestled him to his knees while the accomplice took a bag of mail from the truck and both fled.

The carrier was treated at a nearby hospital for injuries.
