Animal shelter workers say they're overloaded

Updated:

The St. Landry Parish Animal Shelter is undergoing expansion and construction. However, shelter workers say they're overloaded right now.

Spring is typically a busy time for shelters that take in litters of puppies and kittens. And more intake means more animals will have to be euthanized. The shelter not only cares for dogs and cats but is also dealing with over 20 abused and neglected horses as well.

The next phase of their expansion should be completed sometime over summer. They're hoping to make it a more friendly place for people to visit.

The shelter says spaying and neutering is especially important when animals go into heat this time of year.
