Public gets its turn to discuss Louisiana budget

Updated:

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - Lawmakers on the House budget-writing committee are hearing spending requests from the general public after weeks of getting information from individual state agencies.

The Appropriations Committee was holding public testimony day on Monday, letting people talk about what they like or don't like about Gov. Bobby Jindal's budget recommendations for the fiscal year that begins July 1.

Two mothers from northwest Louisiana asked for more money in the transportation department budget to construct cable median barriers along interstates and highways across the state. The women, Tammy Willson and Kelly Hatfield, both lost daughters in accidents where drivers crossed over medians and hit their cars.

Supporters of rural hospitals praised Jindal's budget for their facilities, while representatives of other community hospitals said the governor's spending plans would cut their Medicaid funding.
