HOUMA, La. (AP) - Houma police say the father of two toddlers who were left unattended during a house fire on March 15 was arrested over the weekend. The Courier reports  20-year-old Romell Welsh Sr. turned himself in to Houma police Saturday at 12:40 p.m. telling authorities that he "wanted to do the right thing."

Welsh was booked with two counts of manslaughter and possession of marijuana. He is being held at the parish jail awaiting trial or bond. The mother of the toddlers, 22-year-old Vaneshia Valentine, was arrested on March 26 and faces the same manslaughter and possession charges.

The victims, 2-year-old Romell Welsh Jr. and his 1-year-old sister, Ro'Miyah Welsh, died of smoke inhalation. It was unclear whether the parents have attorneys.
