LPSS board signs interim general counsel

Updated:

The Lafayette Parish School Board President Dr. Hunter Beasely says he's satisfied with the contract signed last week by the law firm of Hammonds, Sills, Adkins and Guice.

Beasley confirms the cost to the school system is based on an hourly rate capped by the state.  "I believe it might be $175.  Whatever the state sets the limit; that's what we pay," explains Dr. Hunter Beasley.

The school board president says one cost the board will not incur is the expense of the attorney's traveling from their main office in baton rouge. The board will not have to pay for that. "It's just a matter of when they are here they'll be charging," adds Beasley.

Attorney Jon Guice has been the representing attorney sitting in on the past couple of board meetings. "If you're talking about a budget workshop or budget meeting, I don't envision them having to be there.  So, I think it's just going to be our two main meetings each month."

Beasley says hiring a private firm to advise the board, school system staff, and the superintendent is a justifiable decision. Beasley contends the counsel the board retained for the interim specializes in education. "People can say yes we had free representation; but in the long run if we can save ourselves just one lawsuit, that pays for itself right there."

The school system's financial department says the money to cover the new legal expense would come from the board's general fund.
