La. public school funding short $55M this year

Updated:

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - State lawmakers have learned that they face education financing gaps totaling $105 million over two years.

Superintendent of Education John White told the House Appropriations Committee on Tuesday that his department is $55 million short of what is needed to cover the costs of this year's public school funding formula.

White says more than half the shortfall is tied to having higher-than-estimated student enrollment at public schools. The rest of it he described as a "cash-flow issue" that he says Gov. Bobby Jindal's administration would explain.

No one from the governor's budget office immediately responded to the request for an explanation.

Meanwhile, White told the committee Jindal's budget is short $50 million of what's needed to cover the school financing plan submitted by the state education board for next year.
