Online shopping is the way to shop these days and it's not uncommon to come home to a package on your doorstep. But that reality posed as an opportunity for one man who was caught on surveillance video, stealing a package off someone's property.
"From an opportunity stand-point, he probably followed the UPS or FedEx truck to see that the packages were being left outside where there's no one home and retrieving those items immediately," said Captain Kip Judice with the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Office.
The neighbor's surveillance video went viral on social media, not only bringing it to authorities' attention, but also helping them pin down the man responsible, 38-year-old Christopher Richard.
"They posted that on Facebook and they got the social media working," said Judice. "It didn't take long before we got several phone calls positively identifying (the suspect)."
It doesn't seem the suspect was targeting specific items. The contents inside the stolen packages ranged from a cellphone, bedding, a television, and even women's lingerie. Further investigation showed Richard had over ten package labels not belonging to him. Judice says Richard is being cooperative and some of the items will be returned to the owners, who were from all over the parish.
"I don't' know of any neighborhood that should be on alert more than any other," said Judice. "We saw stuff from Broussard, stuff from River Ranch, stuff from Duson, and stuff from the city of Lafayette."
