Judge declares mistrial after defendant shoots self

The federal governments case against two high profile attorneys accused of conspiracy in the distribution of synthetic drugs took a dramatic turn Wednesday when one of the defendants shot himself.

Personal injury attorney Barry Domingue and criminal attorney Daniel Stanford have been representing themselves in the governments case against them.

But instead of going to court Wednesday morning, the Lafayette Parish Sheriff's Department says one of the two men, Domingue walked into the back yard in Carencro and shot himself in the head. Domingue was transported to a local hospital where he later died as a result of his injuries.

Wednesday afternoon Domingue's, co-defendant, Stanford asked for and was granted a mistrial. Wednesday U.S. Attorney Stephanie Finley told News 10 a new trial date will be set by the court.
