Lafayette woman arrested for allegedly suffocating child

Updated:

Lafayette police responded to an area hospital on January 29 regarding the death of a five month old girl.

When investigators arrived at the hospital they were advised that the child had died from an accidental suffocation. The incident allegedly occurred at the child's residence in the 100 block of Zim Circle.

The mother advised investigators that a plastic shopping bag had covered the child's head. The child was found not breathing and transported to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

On March 31, detectives received new information in the case and an arrest warrant for first degree murder was issued for the mother, 20-year-old Raven Senegal of Lafayette.

Senegal was arrested Wednesday in Alexandria and is in the process of being transported back to Lafayette.

The investigation remains ongoing.
