A desperate search by the family of a Eunice man missing since last Friday ended tragically when authorities found his body in a gully off of LA Highway 13 in Acadia Parish.
66-year-old, L.J. Walker, who suffered from Alzhiemer's had been missing since Friday. He was last seen Thursday evening by his sister. His sister, Julia Hardy, said he was the backbone of their family. "I'd like to remember him as being that strong person for our family," said Hardy.
Three days after Hardy reported her brother missing, a search team made up of Eunice Police Officers and Firefighters discovered his body about a mile away from where Walker lived. "Right near the apartment complex there's a gully that runs and turns into Acadia Parish where he was found," Eunice Chief Deputy, Varden Guillory, Sr..
Hardy said Walker had been staying at Divine Providence Apartments for the elderly for about eight years. He's been known to wander around the complex, but never this far away. "Just inside of the complex maybe, he wouldn't go to the right department sometimes. But everyone knew him. People would walk him back to his apartment, but he'd never wandered off or been missing like this before," said Guillory. Walker needed assistance when walking.
Chief Guillory said authorities discovered his walker inside of the apartment. Family members said there's no way L. J. Walker could have moved around too much without it. "Without that walker he couldn't have made it that far," said Hardy. Guillory said the gully is located about 50 to 60 feet away from the complex, and can only suspect at this time that Walker may have fallen into the water while wandering.
"We're not suspecting any foul play, we still have to wait on the results of the autopsy to know the cause of death," said Guillory. Authorities said there were no visible injuries. Walker's body was transported to Lake Charles for an autopsy.
