Road repairs based on income

Updated:

Major road repairs are set to start in the Village of Maurice, but only in neighborhoods meeting certain requirements, including income.

According to Village Mayor Wayne Theriot, Maurice has received money from the Louisiana Community Block grant totaling two hundred and seventy five thousand dollars.

The village will put up sixty thousand dollars. The money allows between twelve and fourteen streets to be overlaid and three to be reconstructed. All streets picked to be repaired had to first meet certain state criteria.

According to Mayor Theriot the grant is based upon income and a census of Maurice had to be done in order to get income information and household size. Once that was determined, areas meeting the requirements were targeted and set to be repaired. Theriot says the average income for the target areas are around 12 to 14 thousand dollars a year.

Income restrictions and other criteria were set by the state, not the village. Road construction is set to begin in April and end sometime in June.
