Police: Pit bull kills owner's 4-year-old daughter

Updated:

HOUMA, La. (AP) - Houma Police Chief Todd Duplantis says a pit bull fatally attacked a 4-year-old girl who was watching television and injured her mother when the 27-year-old woman pulled her daughter away.

He says Megan Touchet barricaded herself and her daughter into a bedroom Tuesday evening, called 911 and handed her child out a second-floor apartment window to a rescue worker on a balcony.

The girl, Mia Derouen died at a hospital. Duplantis says Touchet remained hospitalized Wednesday.

He says officers answered a neighbor's call about a disturbance about 7 p.m. Tuesday. They found Touchet in her bedroom and the dog still aggressive. They shot the dog.

The pit bull was one of two belonging to Touchet. Duplantis says the second pit bull was not aggressive and was not shot.
