Construction to begin soon on Lafayette charter school

Updated:

Construction is soon to begin on a new charter school right here in Lafayette.

Willow Charter Academy will be taking the place of the old Albertsons grocery store next to the Northgate Mall. Louisiana achievement charter academies is a state wide board that currently has two schools in Baton Rouge, an application for another in Caddo Parish, and two coming to Lafayette in August.

The board works with the state to start charter schools in needed areas. Jay Miller, Vice President of the Louisiana Achievement Charter Academy says "We don't provide transportation for our charter school so this was a way that a lot of students can actually access it and make it easier for moms to access it because it's in walking distance of some of the target areas we were after."

Willow Charter Academy is a type two charter, meaning that students aren't bound to one geographical area, they can come from all over the parish and state to attend kindergarten through fifth grade; "one grade will be added every year after that until it reaches grade."

For a school that has only been advertised by word of mouth, Miller says the number of potential students surprisingly above average. "Enrollment is off the charts! Usually at this stage we anticipate about 100 to 125 applicants and right now it's already close to 400 applicants."

The first year, capacity will about four hundred, more than likely, the students that are already enrolled will enter a lottery system to get in. The design has been completed and the contractors have been hired. Officials with the Louisiana Achievement Charter Academy expect to begin construction any day now for their opening in August.
