Officials determine cause of gas leak in Opelousas

Officials say they have found the source of the gas leak that caused the evacuation of two school campuses in Opelousas on Friday.

The leak was determined to be coming from the Tobacco Plus store on the corner of Union and Vine Streets. Officials say detectable gas levels are now at a zero and nearby schools will re-open on Monday.

The leak forced the evacuation of South Street Elementary School and the T.H. Harris Campus of SLCC on Friday when strong gas odors were detected coming from the storm drains in the area. No injuries were reported due to the incident and all students were safely evacuated.

South Street Elementary in Opelousas was evacuated due to a gas smell coming from the sewer lines Friday morning. Parents picked up their children at New Life Center and there were no injuries reported. Classes were also cancelled at TH Harris across the street from the school. Fire Officials are asking people to avoid the area if at all possible while they investigate the situation.
