Sales tax collections slump in St. Landry

Updated:

OPELOUSAS, La. (AP) - Sales tax collections are off to a slow start for the year in St. Landry Parish.

Collections dropped by almost 6 percent in January. According to figures released by the St. Landry Parish School Board, which tracks sales taxes for the parish, collections in February dropped by 2.8 percent.

The Daily World reports the February sales tax numbers were the first to include a new 2-cent sales tax in rural St. Landry.

When that revenue - about $376,000 - is factored-out, a comparison with the same month of 2013 shows the decline was closer to 11 percent.
