Construction projects continue at Lafayette Regional Airport

Updated:

Development and construction around Lafayette Regional Airport is picking up speed. Airport officials say they saw an influx of fliers last year and there's a lot of progress to be made.

With roughly 20 flights in and 20 out on any given day, LRA stays busy. And as the busiest season-May, June, and July approaches, there are several projects in the works and a lot ground to cover.

"We're replacing the asphalt ramp with concrete? Why? Well, because you see large aircrafts are on the north ramp," said Greg Roberts, the Director of Aviation.

He says the work around the airport is a sure sign of growth. But it's not all geared towards commercial flying. There's also a lot of private investment the general public does not see.

"We have a very vibrant general aviation community all the way from two-seater Cessna's to huge corporate jets totaling into the tens and millions of dollars," said Roberts.

Another sign of progress is the construction of a new taxiway. It's set for completion sometime this year, but will open up that area of the airport to new development. And with plans to build a new terminal, many folks want more direct connections. A non-stop flight to Denver has been on the radar for several months, but Roberts say that's the airline's decision, but one he remains optimistic will see its day soon.

"It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of when the announcement will come because it just makes so much sense," said Roberts.
