Autistic children & GPS technology

Updated:

Parents with autistic children are looking at GPS technology as a solution to a growing problem.

According to the Autism Society of Acadiana, children with autism often times wander away from their homes or guardians without reason. Sadly many of those incidents end with a child drowning, which is the number one cause of death among autistic children. But federal grant money available to local police departments could put an end to the tragedies.

Vickie Nettles with the Autism Society says what the nonprofit would like to see happen is some progress with local law enforcement agencies to obtain tracking devices that are available to them through federal funds.

The tracking devices would use GPS technology and be monitored by local police departments. Many police departments are interested in the technology but need more information regarding fees.

The Autism Society of Acadiana is looking for parents who support this effort to contact them. This would allow the nonprofit to gather more information law enforcement officials need to make a decision on bringing the devices to Acadiana. That number is 337- 235-4425.
