Museum to screen film 'Dancehalls of South Louisiana'

The Jeanerette Bicentennial Museum will host the one hour film viewing of Dancehalls of South Louisiana, led by UL Lafayette documentary filmmaker and folklorist John Sharp.

The film includes an introduction by Sharp along with a brief history discussion on Louisiana dancehalls. The event will be held at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 9 at the Jeanerette Museum located at 500 E. Main St., Jeanerette. This program is held free of charge and is suitable for an adult audience.

Sharp, who is the assistant director of research at the Center for Louisiana Studies at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, will share his research on local dancehalls as audience members have the opportunity to view his latest film along with the opportunity to interact with Sharp to provide additional research for the project.

Learn about the history of dancehalls, where they came from and a little about their architecture along with the bands and performers that entertained the public. Sharp has researched over 1,200 dancehalls and clubs. He won the 2012 Louisiana Filmmaker award from Louisiana Economic Development for his film, Dancehalls of South Louisiana.

Sharp also served as writer, producer and photographer for the documentary, Water on Road, the story of Isle de Jean Charles, Louisiana a small community, made up entirely of members of the Biloxi-Chitimacha-Choctaw and Houma Indian Tribes.
