Picking up garbage following a Mardi Gras parade is a dirty job.

"We use street sweepers. We used four on the road this year, along with dump trucks, front-end loaders and about 165 personnel," says Brian Smith, head of the street division for Lafayette-City Parish Public Works Department.

But, Smith has to do it. He's responsible for post-parade clean up.

"Over the past few years, it's been about 35 tons of garbage," says Smith.

Smith says his division gets about 90,000 annually for the job. Private property owners, however, aren't as fortunate.

Two days after the Krewe of Bonaparte parade and trash was still lining the properties of businesses and residents in the Hub City, including plastic bottles, paper bags and plastic cups.

Bridget Derouen manages a dental office on N. College Rd. She says it costs them about $500 just to put up orange fencing to protect their property.

"The initial investment to get the fencing, I'm assuming, is a couple thousand dollars," says Derouen.

Derouen says that doesn't compare to the cost without it.

"We've had people tear up our landscaping in the past and we've had, you know, different things on the property, like dirty diapers and things like that," says Derouen.

Smith says the orange fences are costly, but the best line of defense during a parade.
