Bridge closure leaves residents annoyed

A bridge connecting Lafayette and Vermilion Parishes is no longer in service, leaving many residents stuck and annoyed.

People living along Petite Road in Lafayette and Catalon Avenue in Maurice were connected by a bridge that crossed over the Granges coulee. That was until Lafayette Consolidated Government, that owns the bridge, had to close it for safety reasons.

One resident who doesn't drive and depends on crutches for mobility, crossed the bridge daily to visit his son. Now he's stuck at home because the only other way to get there is highway 167 which is definitely not meant for foot traffic. Herbert Norman says unless he has a ride he just sits at home.

According to the Vermilion Parish Police Jury, they are working with Lafayette Consolidated Government to turn the timber bridge into a concrete bridge. Unfortunately for residents living near there, it may take up to a year to fix and re-open.
