Artist in residence Leah Graeff presents Biophilia

Updated:
Opening: March 8
Sunrise Performance: March 16, 7:00 am, followed by yoga session ($5)
Installation until April 30
AcA Moss Artloft and Mallia Gallery

The term Biophilia refers to the bond that naturally exists between human beings and other living systems or the urge to affiliate with other forms of life.

For Leah Graeff, AcA artist-in-resident, her work, Biophilia became a way to express this bond or need. Graeff collaborated closely with photographer Kristie Cornell and musician Allison Bohl DeHart.

The resulting mixed media installation and performance will take the viewer into a space with photography, sculpture and even grass brought into AcA's Art Loft. Viewers will confront intimate photographs by Graeff and Cornell then remove their shoes to walk on the grass and reflect on the images.

The viewer will be invited to write a simple ideal, held as an adolescent on a piece of paper and hang it on a clothesline.

"Maybe it's one he's held onto, maybe it's one that has been swept away, but by being in the space, he will realize that the simplest of goals are still attainable. By spending time in the space the viewer will be able to relax and reflect and leave resuscitated and receptive to his environment." –Leah Graeff

For Graeff, the goal is to give the viewer a reprieve, to allow him to relax, reflect and leave resuscitated and receptive to the environment.

On March 16, Graeff, DeHart and others will perform a series of songs, written by DeHart as a response to the space. The music expresses what it feels like to be in nature, what it felt like to grow up outside…songs that search for a connection to nature and the world around us.

After the sunrise performance, Alyson Schexnayder will lead a yoga session in the space, furthering the viewer's connection to the mind, body and environment.
