Updated:

GRETNA, La. (AP) - A 21-year-old Metairie man who squeezed a hamster to death at a mall pet store has pleaded guilty to aggravated cruelty to animals.

NOLA.com/The Times-Picayune reports state Judge Steve Grefer ordered Vincent M. Caracci to serve two years' probation and perform 80 hours of community service.

Grefer ordered Caracci must undergo psychological evaluation at his own expense, and he's barred from owning pets while on probation.

Prosecutors say the incident happened on March 27.

At the time he was arrested, Caracci was on probation for possessing synthetic marijuana.
