"Pal or Protection?" Will your dog protect you in a crisis?

Updated:

They're called "man's best friend" and with over 78 million American households owning at least one dog it's clear it's for a reason. But besides a happy face to come home to, many people own dogs to serve a purpose.

With hundreds of domestic breeds in all shapes, sizes, and temperaments, there's a wide variety to choose. But for households who want a dog for protection--like a guard dog--the perfect fit may not be so easy.

Roger Abshire, who runs U.S. Canine, a dog training facility, says more often than not, people aren't sure exactly what they're getting.

He says some dogs are predisposed to the type of behavior needed for personal protection but that scope is limited.

"The core of the dog depends on the personal characteristics that the dog would possess that would constitute the dog to be potential dog for personal protection." said Abshire.
