Carnivale en Rio parade rolls through Lafayette

Updated:

The Carnival season officially kicked off Saturday in Lafayette. The Krewe of Carnivale en Rio's parade begins the Mardi Gras season two weeks before the actual holiday.

Nine years ago when the krewe was established, city officials asked them to celebrate in advance to extend the Mardi Gras festivities. Drawing an estimated crowd of one hundred fifty thousand in 2013, with Saturday's weather they expected over two hundred thousand people in attendance.

"The Krewe of Rio was started because we really like the Krewe of Rio de Janeiro and how beautiful it is. So, we wanted to mimic that atmosphere, bright, colorful, beautiful." said Parade captain Blane Comeaux.

Parades continue throughout the Hub City starting Sunday at Vermilionville, and the Scott parade Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
