Wednesday afternoon St. Martin Parish sheriffs deputies executed a search warrant leading to the rescue of dogs in Breaux Bridge.

Police say investigators removed a total of forty seven dogs and seized items commonly associated with dog fighting. Major Ginny Higgins of the St. Martin Parish Sheriffs Office says, "There were some things seized such as treadmills that were modified obviously to train a dog so this was a pretty serious situation."

Jason Hasket, 25, of Natchitoches Louisiana was arrested on 47 counts of cruelty to animals, dog fighting, several drug related charges and possession of a firearm where the serial number had been removed. As for the dogs, director of animal services is focusing on finding good homes for these animals.

Michelle Brignac, Director of St. Martin Parish Animal Services told us, "We are coordinating with rescue groups in other states and locally to try to get them to safety and out of harms way."

The shelter houses a little over thirty animals, due to the circumstances provisions have been made in order to provide care for as many dogs as possible without overcrowding. "The cruelty to animals is a big thing and you have this times that many animals, we're really excited we were able to find out about it" said Major Higgins.

Deputies ask us to keep an eye open for potential rings my spotting chains that are too large for the animals, lots of traffic in and out of homes where there seems to be an abundance of barking dogs.

Wednesday, investigators with the St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office executed a search warrant at a residence in the 1400 block of Breaux Bridge Senior High School Rd., in Breaux Bridge resulting in the arrest of Jason Haskett.

Thursday, investigators with the St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office are releasing information regarding a second individual, Antonio Boyd, 35, Breaux Bridge, who is also wanted in connection with suspected dog fighting, drug and weapons charges. In November of 2010 Boyd was arrested on fifteen counts of Aggravated cruelty to animal, eight counts of Simple cruelty to animals, and two counts of Dog Fighting.

The charges in 2010 were the result of a narcotics investigation conducted at the residence on Breaux Bridge Senior High School Rd.

Thursday, Haskett, who was booked into the St. Martin Parish Correctional Center on the above charges Wednesday, had his bond set at $65,000.

Anyone with information on Boyd's whereabouts is asked to contact the St. Martin Parish Sheriff's Office at (337) 394-3071.
