As the village of Maurice continues to grow, the mayor there wants to ensure it's done safely and with structure. As of tonight the village of Maurice will change the path it's on as it continues to grow.

"We actually are going to adopt an ordinance which will form a zoning commission." said Wayne Theriot.

Mayor Wayne Theriot says by adopting the ordinance allowing the villages first ever five member commission, it also will bring guidelines as to what can and can not set up shop.

"Also within that ordinance it will zone the whole village as light industrial." said Theriot.

Even though the laws will now prohibit certain businesses like an oil refinery, mayor Theriot says zoning will ultimately protect the village's assets in the future.

"We need to consider protection of our places of gathering, schools and public entities. We looking for good of Maurice and Vermilion Parish." said Theriot.
