Gary: Today on your lawn and garden we're talking about the lawn, you might say it's kind of strange for this time of year but you gotta keep it up in different ways and John what do we have here to help us out?
JOHN: We have a lot of weed killers, cuz that is what you have a problem with right now in your lawn. I have these right here, one is called Atrazine. It kills the weed seed before it comes up, plus it kills what is already up, so it is a pre and post emergent herbicide. It works very good. You want to use these products at this time of the year. February, March, April, these are the best times to use them because they're not harsh on your lawn. You don't want to burn them.
We have this other product right here called the weed zone, it is very similar but it doesn't kill the weed seeds but it is a good topical kill. It kills clovers and things like that real quick.
Everybody wants to know what to fertilize in February or March, but really it is not recommended. The lawn is dormant so if you're throwing fertilizer out it sure can't do anything because the grass isn't growing. Plus you don't want a lot of new growth because at those times in the temperatures, once they start getting into the sixties and seventies then you're gonna have more trouble with brown patch.
There is one product you can use. It's called Milorganite it is a natural product you can put it out at any time. It doesn't promote growth, what it does is anything you do have that is green, it's gonna green it up. So this can be used in flowerbeds and everywhere. You want to wait until the end of March, beginning of April before putting out your regular fertilizers or your weed and feeds out. It'll be much safer for you doing that.
