New Orleans officer shoots, kills man

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - New Orleans police say an officer who answered a shoplifting report shot and killed a 31-year-old man in the Hollygrove neighborhood.
Superintendent Ronal Serpas says the officer has been reassigned to desk duty. That's standard procedure after a police shooting.
Serpas won't release the officer's name, but says officers generally don't fire unless they believe their lives are threatened.
The police chief says a loaded .45-caliber gun was found next to the man.
Serpas says that gun and the officer's gun were taken as evidence, and both the officer who shot the man and an officer who was with him are being questioned.
Neither Serpas nor the Orleans Parish coroner's office has released the dead man's name.
