From Lafayette Parish School Board Spokesperson Angela Morrison.
"Earlier today there was a tragic accident on Highway 90 in St. Mary Parish involving a passenger vehicle and a Lafayette Parish School Bus. The bus was transporting the Lafayette High School baseball team, to play in a game in Berwick LA, when, according to police reports, a passenger vehicle traveling in the opposite direction suffered a tire blowout and crossed the median. Despite the bus driver's best efforts, the two vehicles collided and four passengers in the car lost their lives. Several passengers on the bus were also transported to area hospitals, but our understanding at this time is that their injuries are not life threatening.
Assistant Superintendent Sandra Billeadeau and Transportation Director Damon Evans have been in touch with state police and local hospitals and are coordinating the district's response. As in all accidents involving LPSS buses, the driver will be tested for alcohol or other substances, but at this time we have no reason to believe the bus driver to have been at fault. In fact, state police have indicated to us that her actions likely prevented greater injury to her passengers.
'At this time, we are working to obtain more information and confirm the status of those taken to area hospitals. We are deeply saddened by this tragic loss of life and our hearts go out to the family of the victims.'"
