Founded in 1821, school continues educating students

Deep in the heart of Grand Coteau lies a gem dear to many. Early and important center of Catholic education. Noted for its Creole architecture. The town developed around Academy of the Sacred Heart, founded in 1821.

"Our mission today is articulated through five goals: The personal and active faith in God, a deep respect for intellectual values, social awareness which impales to action, the building of community as a Christian value and personals growth in an atmosphere of wise freedom." said Lynne Lieux RSCJ at Academy of the Sacred Heart.

After nearly 200 years of existence, one may wonder how an institution is able to continue educating students.

"I think fidelity to the mission and trusting in the providence of God." said Lieux

With that being said this place has not been without challenges

"We had a battle of the Civil War occurred adjacent to the property, in such a way that you could hear the guns and the canons of being shot and classes continued here." said Lieux

General Nathaniel Banks was the commander of the Union troops. The Union claimed victory in that battle and took over the Opelousas territory.

"And when that happened General Banks sent a message to the superior here to say that he was sending supplies, flowers, coffee, sugar and he was sending someone to protect the school during the remainder of the war. The reason was because his daughter was being educated by the religious of the Sacred Heart in New York." said Lieux
