US permit approved for Cameron plant expansion

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Sempra International says it has received the final Energy Department permit it needs for a proposed expansion of its natural gas terminal in Cameron Parish.

Company spokesman J.C. Thomas says approval is still needed from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. He says a public hearing is scheduled Thursday in Sulphur on a draft environmental impact statement.

Sempra wants to add liquification plants and other facilities to turn the import terminal in Hackberry into an export terminal.

The expansion would cost up to $10 billion.

The Energy Department already had approved exports from the terminal to countries that have free-trade agreements with the United States. Thomas says Tuesday's approval covers all other countries.

The American Petroleum Institute says more than 20 applications from other companies are awaiting Energy Department approval.
