Breaux Bridge schools reconfiguration

Updated:

In efforts to keep up with the surrounding districts, the St. Martin Parish School Board is shifting a few grade levels around in some Breaux Bridge schools.

In the past, reconfigurations have been completed in Cecila, as well as St. Martinville schools. Now, Superintendent Lottie Bebbe believes Breaux Bridge schools deserve that same attention.

"We have had success with the reconfiguration and we feel that we would need to do something within the Breaux Bridge area" said Superintendent Dr. Lottie Bebbe.

The move will consist of moving two grades from Breaux Bridge Elementary to Breaux Bridge Primary, and moving one grade from Breaux Bridge Primary to Breaux Bridge Jr. High. Board Member Floyd Knott of District 9 says, "Like in the other two areas, I believe that it is going to save about $18 million, not having to build a new school, because two of our schools in the Breaux Bridge area are fairly old, and I anticipate, likewise, student scores will improve."

By August of 2015, the Breaux Bridge Elementary location will no longer house students, leading to a rise in enrollment at Breaux Bridge Primary and the Jr. High school. "We have to be competitive and we certainly have to make every effort to retain our students and this is one way that we that we hope to achieve mean" says Dr. Bebbe.

The estimated cost of the total reconfiguration is expected to be about 7.3 to $8.6 million. Most of those funds will come from the over $40 million in bonds that have already been approved by parish voters.
