Earl Joseph Earl Joseph

A Lafayette Parish grand jury has indicted 15 year old Earl Joseph the third of Lafayette on charges of first-degree murder in the Sunday night shooting death of 49 year old Michael Patin.

Joseph is accused of shooting Patin in the back shortly after 11 p.m. Sunday at the Jockey Lot Flea Market. He is being held without bond.

Authorities first responded Sunday shortly after 9 p.m. to a theft-in-progress call at the jockey lot on the Evangeline thruway.

Sheriff's deputies, Lafayette Police and Carencro Police captured four of the juvenile suspects and left the scene about 11:05 p.m. At 11:12 p.m., deputies were called back to the jockey lot concerning the shooting of Patin.

Although only Joseph has been charged in Patin's death, he was among a group of five other boys, ages 12 to 16, who are being investigated for other incidents including carjacking and thefts.

Joseph has been moved from Lafayette Detention Center to the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center where he is being handled within the criminal justice system as an adult.  He will be housed in an area separate from general population.
