LAFAYETTE – Over $20,000 in scholarships was awarded to more than a dozen students at South Louisiana Community College for the current semester.

Through the generosity of companies and individuals in Acadiana, these students will have a portion or nearly all of their education for the spring semester paid.

Some of the area donors who offered spring scholarships included Cochrane Technologies, Home Furniture, KATC TV-3, iConvergence, Fugro Chance Inc., and more.

"Many of our students face serious financial barriers in their quests to complete their college educations," said Dr. Natalie Harder, SLCC chancellor. "With these scholarship donations, we can help to ensure students finish their college journeys."

The largest donation came from KATC TV 3 and Home Furniture. The two companies teamed up to give $12,000 in scholarships to four SLCC students. Both freshmen and returning students could qualify for the scholarship. Recipients of this scholarship include Mary Ardoin, Kimmerly Courvelle, Bennett LaMotte, and Chastity Leon.

 Other scholarships and recipients include:

• Acadian Campus Scholarship, Nicholas Blankenship.

• AT&T Construction Technology Scholarship, Shelly Boudreaux, Devin LeBoeuf, and Nicholas Blankenship

• Cochrane Technologies Scholarship, Rachel Waldroup

• Joyce Coreil Books and Supplies Scholarship, Katheryn Manuel.

• Kiwanis Club of Opelousas Books and Supplies Scholarship, Tammy Hebert.

To date, more than $3,500 has been given by SLCC employees, with the college's Foundation board members matching the employee donations. Another $6,500 has been pledged through the end of 2014 through employee payroll deductions.

Scholarships for the Fall 2014 semester will be available beginning in April. At that time, current students and first-time freshman interested in applying for the scholarships should visit SLCC's website at www.solacc.edu and click on Student Scholarships under Quick Links.
