When 64-year-old Sandra Tillett was reported missing in St. Landry Parish authorities began questioning her husband and he soon disappeared as well.
It all started when Sandra Tillett's daughter called deputies concerned that she had not heard from her mother in six weeks.
"Sheriff Bobby Guidroz: "We sent deputies over here to check with her husband and he told us some stories that she had died out of state. We checked those stories out and they proved to be false. So we came back with detectives to follow up only to find out he had fled""
Arthur Tillett made it all the way to Ogdon, Georgia before a traffic stop led to his arrest and subsequent return to Louisiana. Saturday morning, Tillett stuck to his story that his 64 year old wife died naturally, but added this detail, "burying her in a shed.""
Deputies and forensic experts combed through a shed located in the back of the Tillett's home as neighbors in this subdivision located on Carrington Place Road watched with curious eyes. Many were shocked to hear the news, but all confirmed one detail; they hadn't seen Sandra since July of this year.
The owner of this subdivision told our crew off-camera that Sandra, retired from the air force, had been ill for over a year prior to her disappearance, and he just wasn't sure what happened to her. As for officials, after removing a Jeep found on top of a cement slab inside the shed, they began excavating and soon made a gruesome discovery
"Sheriff Bobby Guidroz: "We found her body buried in the garage. But he didn't confess to killing her? No he did not. We have a lot of questions we have to get answered from him."
Questions like how did Sandra die? Why did her husband bury her in a shed? And how long had he been living with the body of his dead wife in his backyard? The investigation continues as the Lafayette Coroner works positively identify the body and cause of death.
According to Sheriff Guidroz, Arthur only confessed to burying Sandra's body but did not confess to have any part in her death. Guidroz says if Sandra Tillett's death is ruled a homicide, Arthur could faces murder charges, but is currently being held at the St. Landry Parish Jail for obstruction of justice.
