The Carencro City Police Department has made an additional arrest on a suspect previously charged with Hit and Run Driving. The most recent arrest charges the suspect with First Degree Vehicular Negligent Injuring
Officers with the Carencro City Police conducted a follow up investigation on a hit and run accident which occurred in the 300 block of West Gloria Switch Road at approximately 9:30 p.m. on December 14, 2013.
During the follow up investigation officers learned that the suspect Luis Ortiz did admit to operating the vehicle that was left at the scene of the accident and indicated that he fled the scene on foot at which time he failed to identify himself or render aid to the victims. During an interview Mr. Ortiz stated that he consumed beer and tequila since 11:00 a.m. the day of the accident up until the time of the accident.
Due to injuries sustained in the accident, a female vehicle who was 6 to 7 months pregnant and was a passenger in the car that was struck by Ortiz, had to be transported to a local hospital at which time an emergency Cesarean Section had to be performed, and through complications the child did not survive after delivery.
Carencro Officers have upgraded the charges to First Degree Vehicular Negligent Injuring and obtained an arrest warrant for Ortiz. Ortiz was located by Carencro officers along with Calcasieu Parish Sheriff's Office and Louisiana State Police at Delta Downs Racetrack. Ortiz was arrested and booked into the Calcasieu Parish Correctional Center and released to the Carencro Police Department and transported back to Lafayette Parish where he was booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center. Ortiz has a $30,000.00 bond.
