New Iberia couple tricks armed robber

Updated:

An elderly New Iberia woman was stepping outside her house, when she got the surprise of her life on Tuesday evening.

The woman, who lives with her husband on the 600 block of S. Weeks St., says she was opening her back door around 8:30 p.m., when a gun-wielding black male wearing a ski mask and a striped shirt ran inside. She says the armed robber threw her to the ground, leaving her with sore shoulders.

According to the couple, the suspect stole a little more than $2, but got his own surprise after demanding more money and threatening them at gun point.

"I hollered. I said 'man, hurry up' and I looked through the hall [in the house] and I says 'hurry up, get through the door, catch him!'" says the 72-year-old male victim.

But, there was nobody down the hall.

"Yeah, I was faking it. He [the suspect] didn't know who I had in the house," says the male victim.

He says that was enough to scare the suspect holding a gun to the back of his wife's head, threatening to shoot her.

"He ran out. So, I hurry up and locked the door and he was coming back up the walk and then he left," says the male victim.

The 70-year-old female victim says Iberia Parish Sheriff deputies were swarming onto their property only two minutes after her call for help. She says as they were pulling onto her driveway, she was staring out her kitchen window and saw the suspect make his way out her backyard towards Julia St.

The female victim says her and her husband have been living in their S. Weeks St. house for over 30 years without incident.

"I never would have thought about it. I was never scared. I'd come out here at 10 p.m., 11 p.m., 12 a.m. by myself," says the female victim.

The Sheriff's Office is asking for anyone with information on the home invasion on S. Weeks St. to contact their office at 337-369-3711.
