11 Cajuns named to all-Sun Belt teams

Updated:

Elijah McGuire was named the 2013 Sun Belt Freshman of the Year and 11 Louisiana football players, including first team honorees Justin Anderson, Alonzo Harris, Andre Huval, Darryl Surgent and McGuire, were named to the 2013 All-Sun Belt Conference Football teams, when the Sun Belt released it annual awards on Wednesday.

The awards and other honors were determined by the results of balloting by both the head coach and a select media member from all eight Sun Belt schools.

Anderson was selected at linebacker, Huval on the offensive line, Surgent as a returns specialist and both Harris and McGuire as running backs.

In addition, Justin Hamilton (DL), Trevence Patt (DB), Daniel Quave (OL) and Jamal Robinson (WR) were named to the All-Sun Belt second team with Jacob Maxwell (TE) and Dominique Tovell (LB) being accorded honorable mention status.

"I am proud for the players who were selected to receive post-season honors today," Louisiana head coach Mark Huspeth said.  "These honors reflect the hard work and dedication and a commitment to excellence that these players have made throughout their careers.

"As happy as I am for those selected, football is a team sport and there were many others who contributed to our success this season.  I feel like all of the Cajuns are all-league.  Guys like Terrance Broadway, Mykhael Quave, James Butler, Brandon McCray and others — players who have meant so much to us this year — are just as deserving as those who have been recognized," Hudspeth added.

McGuire, a freshman from Houma, La., ranked fourth in the conference in rushing, carrying 92 times for 818 yards, a nation's-best 8.9 average and seven touchdowns while catching 15 passes for 290 yards and three scores.  He had a team-high 15 plays of 20 yards or better this season.

McGuire had four 100-yard rushing games, including a career-high 137 yards and three touchdowns against Nicholls State in his Cajun Field debut.  At Georgia State on Nov. 16, he became one of just four players in the nation this year, and the first in school history to rush for 100 yards and catch passes for 100 yards in the same game.

Anderson, a senior from Foley, Ala., posted five double-figure tackle games en route to leading the Sun Belt and ranking 14th nationally with 123 tackles this year.  He was named the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Week after making 16 tackles and forcing and recovering two fumbles in a win at WKU on Oct. 15.  He enters the bowl game with 249 career tackles.

Harris, a junior from Gadsden, Ala., carried 186 times for 868 yards and 13 touchdowns this year to rank third in the conference in both rushing and touchdowns.  He enters the bowl game ranked third in school history in rushing touchdowns (31), fourth in rushing yards (2,449) and fifth in carries (519).

Huval, a senior from Scott, La., has started 38 straight games at center for the Cajuns, anchoring one of the best offensive lines in the league.  He has helped Louisiana to lead the Sun Belt and rank 26th nationally in rushing (207.6).  A two-time Capital One Academic All-District selection, Huval has twice been named to the preseason watch list by the Rimington Trophy, which annually goes to the nation's top center.

Surgent, a senior from Alexandria, La., ranked 12th nationally, returning 22 kickoffs for 598 yards and a 27.2 average, and was third in the Sun Belt averaging 9.4 yards on 12 punt returns.  He was one of a handful of players nationally this year to return both a punt and a kickoff for a touchdown.  His 100-yard kickoff return at Kansas State is a school record and he holds the schol records for both kickoffs returnd (129) and return yards (2,744) in a career.

Hamilton, a junior from Natchez, Miss., led all Cajuns linemen with 37 tackles, adding three quarterback sacks and eight TFL.

Patt, a junior from Lafayette, started all 12 games in the secondary, ranking fifth on the team with 54 tackles and second in the Sun Belt in passes defended.

Daniel Quave, a junior from Gautier, Miss., has started all 38 games during his career at offensive guard.  He leads the team with 30 knockdown blocks this season.

Robinson, a junior from Slidell, La., leads the team and ranks fifth in the Sun Belt with 50 catches for 812 yards with eight touchdowns this year.

Maxwell, a senior from Pearl River, La., has split the tight end duties with Ian Thompson this season, making 12 catches for 158 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Tovell, a sophomore from Columbia, Miss., was second on the team with 64 tackles this year, leading the squad with 12 tackles for loss.  He had five or more tackles in eight of the last nine games.

The 11 Louisiana honorees close out the 2013 season when the Ragin' Cajuns face Tulane on Saturday, Dec. 21 at 8:00 p.m. in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
