Rash of armed robberies hits Lafayette

Updated:

The Hub City has experienced a rash of armed robberies this past week. In fact, several of them occurred late Thursday early Friday morning.

Thursday evening the Lafayette police department responded to a series of armed robberies. The first being a simple robbery where the suspect pretended to purchase a bottle of water. When the clerk opened the register, he grabbed an undisclosed amount of cash and fled the scene.

Corporal Paul Mouton of the Lafayette Police Department says, "We did locate an individual whom we stopped and were able to make an arrest for resisting an officer. His involvement in the simple robbery still don't understand completely at this time but we are still investigating."

Two additional armed robberies occurred on the 600 block of Kaliste Saloom Road and another on the 3400 block of West Pinhook road. The suspect entered with a white shirt over his head, approached the counter producing a handgun demanding cash, and taking an undisclosed amount of cash said Mouton. In both cases he was wearing a vest type jacket dark in color at the time of the crime.

The recent rise in crime can partially be credited to the holiday season, but authorities are making necessary adjustments.

"Sometimes around different times of year we'll have a spike in crime. We feel that's what's going on right now and we are trying to adjust our resources at the police department to attack those issues and that's where we are currently.

As the search continues for armed robbery suspects, Louisiana law RS 14:64 states whoever commits the crime of armed robbery shall be imprisoned at hard labor for not less than ten years and for not more than ninety-nine years, without benefit of parole, probation, or suspension of sentence.
