So, what's wrong with dollar stores?

Lafayette Consolidated council members could put a moratorium or restrictions on the construction of Dollar General and Family Dollar stores in the parish.

Council Member Kenneth Boudreaux says he is conducting a study on those stores to determine how many is too many.

Boudreaux says he is still conducting the study. But, he says, in the event the council votes to place some sort of moratorium or restrictions on the construction of future stores, the council would be well within its legal rights.

"We could say, we will not allow any more development of these type stores in a particular area...[if] the number of stores is not an issue, but the restrictions that are put on the type of construction is, the council and the Planning Commission has the ability to say, if you are going to open this type of operation, it should function like this," says Boudreaux.

Boudreux says the study began in October, following complaints from his constituents.

"We don't want to create a hardship, if there is a supply and demand for it. But, I think we continue to look at it to determine it. Not just let an individual say ‘man they got these things popping up all over the place.' We'll say you think they're popping up all over the place? Let's get the data," says Boudreaux.

As of yet, there's no end date for the study, but Boudreaux says he is narrowing his study down to three key areas.

"The number of stores in a particular area is one. The impact it has on other businesses locating to the area is certainly another and the activity that goes on at the location when it's a stand-alone facility," says Boudreaux.
