A statement from Superintendent Cooper


During the Lafayette Parish School Board Meeting last night, there were serious mistakes made in reference to the relieving of the Assistant District Attorney from his position of General Counsel to the Lafayette Parish School Board that I believe strongly the public needs to be made aware and that Board members have to be queried about and made to be accountable. These actions continue to disrupt the workplace and thwart the forward movement of the District.

1) The Board has broken its own policy BBE which states, "The office of the District Attorney shall act as counsel for the Board and the Lafayette Parish School District." This item, although listed in Introduction, was pulled and never acted upon, therefore remaining in affect. Therefore, the later action to remove the Assistant District attorney as General Counsel was invalid and broke the board's own policy.

2) By acting to relieve the Assistant District as General Counsel, the Board has left the Lafayette Parish School System with no general counsel and in a precarious position legally.

This latest action adds to the pattern of some members of the Board, acting as a majority, breaking their own policies (reference the health insurance debacle). The question to be asked is, "What are the consequences to the Board for routinely
