Lafayette reworks, revives 'junked vehicle' law

LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - Lafayette city-parish government has laid the groundwork to revive an anti-blight effort that calls for hauling off broken down and rusting vehicles.

The Advocate reports the City-Parish Council voted unanimously Tuesday on a revised "junked vehicle" ordinance crafted to address issues raised in a 2007 legal challenge that halted enforcement of the law.

The lawsuit was brought by a man who fought the city's seizure of vehicles on his property.

The case never went to trial, but city-parish government settled it for $70,000 last year after a judge's pre-trial rulings on the constitutionality of the old junked vehicle law painted a dim prospect for the city's defense.
